    -tracheostomy is a surgical procedure for making an opening in the anterior wall of the trachea and converting it to a stoma on the skin surface

    - the functions of tracheostomy are summarized by the mnemonic 'EVRA'

    E = effective tracheobronchial toileting e.g. in patients with flail chest.

    V = ventilatory support in respiratory insufficiency e.g. in patients with paralysis of the respiratory muscles as in tetanus

    R = relief of upper airway obstruction e.g. in bilateral choana atresia, croup, etc.

    A = adjunct in major head and neck surgeries e.g maxillectomy
